 Michelle S. Johnson, Ph.D. will share how black barbers mobilized across professions to challenge the political, legal and social systems of slavery. The stories of George DeBaptiste of Detroit and Calvin Hackett of Marshall, significant figures in what came to be known as the Underground Railroad, highlight how black Michigan barbers deeply and impactfully established roots in a long-standing regional, national and international history of resistance.
